Summer of Art Song Festival 2025
The Art Song Preservation Society of New York (ASPSNY) is pleased to announce our upcoming summer festival hosted by Manhattan School of Music. The project, a collaborative partnership between ASPSNY and Manhattan School of Music (MSM), will showcase talented artists in a wide-ranging celebration of art song. Attendees will enjoy recitals and performance workshops at MSM on the UWS highlighting canonical repertoire, contemporary songs, and underrepresented BIPOC composers and performers.
This project is made possible in part with funds from Creative Engagement, a regrant program supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York state legislature, and the Howard Gilman Foundation, and is administered by Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC). Program funding is also provided by the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone Development Corporation (UMEZ). The UMEZ Arts Engagement program is administered by Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC). LMCC serves, connects, and makes space for artists and community.

Program costs: In 2025, there is no application fee. However, for singers admitted into the program, there will be a $25 program fee per masterclass. The fee is waived for all singers enrolled at Manhattan School of Music or who have graduated within the past 6 months from MSM. Additionally, for pianists accepted into in the program, there will be no cost. Please keep in mind that only a limited number of pianists will be accepted so it is highly competitive.
Auditors - Open to the public: The public is warmly invited to observe these masterclasses and gain insight from renowned master teachers and performers in the art song genre as they work with talented singers and pianists. The audit fee is $10 per masterclass.

Lauded by The New York Times as a “terrific singer” with a “deep, rich timbre” and the San Francisco Chronicle as an “opera powerhouse” with a “weighty and forthright” sound, Sidney Outlaw continues to delight audiences in the U.S. and abroad with his rich and versatile baritone and engaging stage presence. A sought-after concert singer and recitalist, Mr. Outlaw collaborates regularly with renowned pianists Warren Jones, Carol Wong, Steven Blier, and Michael Barrett. His concert and recital appearances include the debut as John Stevens in the world premiere concert of H. Leslie Adam’s opera Blake at the prestigious Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem, and the world premiere of Wayne Oquin’s A Time to Break Silence: Songs inspired by the Words and Writings of Martin Luther King, Jr., commissioned by The Juilliard School. Mr Outlaw will guide singers and the audience on an exploration of songs by African American composer Harry Burleigh.

For over four decades, Mark Markham has enchanted audiences worldwide with his exceptional musical talent and boundless dedication to the art of music. As a Steinway artist, Markham's illustrious career has been marked by accolades, remarkable collaborations, and a profound commitment to the craft. Mr. Markham, renowned for his work with legendary American soprano Jessye Norman (1945-2019) for 20 years with nearly 300 performances in over 25 countries, will work with singers on the French mélodie repertoire. Markham was awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award from John Hopkins University, and is considered one of the most prominent performers and teachers in his profession. In recent years, recitals have been given with a new generation of stars including, Karen Slack (soprano), Limmie Pulliam(tenor), and J’Nai Bridges (mezzo). Markham also has his own summer workshop, Singing in Sicily – a non-profit intensive training program for talented young singers from around the world.

As a Steinway artist, Markham's illustrious career has been marked by accolades, remarkable collaborations, and a profound commitment to the craft. Mr. Markham, renowned for his work with legendary American soprano Jessye Norman (1945-2019) for 20 years with nearly 300 performances in over 25 countries, will work with singers on the American art song repertoire. Markham was awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award from John Hopkins University, and is considered one of the most prominent performers and teachers in his profession. German Art Song with NILS NEUBERT
Tenor Nils Neubert was born and raised in Hamburg, Germany, and maintains careers as a performer, coach, educator, scholar, and administrator in the United States and abroad. He is a sought-after interpreter of song, oratorio, opera, and chamber music, and has appeared as a soloist and small ensemble singer throughout North America and Europe. Nils Neubert teaches German diction and repertoire at the Manhattan School of Music (since 2015) and the Juilliard School (since 2013) and served as German coach at the Music Academy of the West for seven summers (2016–2022). He joined the Glimmerglass Festival and the Wolf Trap Opera Company in that same capacity during 2020 and 2022, respectively, as well as the music staff of the Metropolitan Opera in 2022, where he also began coaching for the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program in 2023. As of the 2023–24 academic year, Nils Neubert holds a full-time appointment in Vocal Arts at the Manhattan School of Music. He is also the current president of NATS-NYC (2022–2024) and has served on the University Faculty Senate at the New School (2017–2020). He will guide the audience through an illuminating discussion with singers as they perform some of the most cherished German song literature.

Bel Canto Vocal Technique & Italian Art Songs with Andrea DelGiudice
Andrea DelGiudice is an internationally acclaimed soprano and stage director whose career spans major opera houses across Europe and the U.S., including Scottish National Opera, Munich State Opera, Arizona Opera, and Edmonton Opera. Known for her powerful lirico-spinto voice and specialization in Puccini and Verdi heroines, she has performed alongside such legends as Plácido Domingo and Sherrill Milnes. A versatile artist, Andrea has directed innovative productions of La Traviata, Carmen, and Suor Angelica, as well as world premieres including Jake Landau’s Pietà and Aeterna. She is also a co-librettist and vocal consultant for new musical works and Broadway readings. As a master teacher and vocal consultant, her students perform with leading opera houses and symphonies worldwide, including the Metropolitan Opera, Paris Opera, and Carnegie Hall. She currently serves as Founder and Director of Vocal Arts at Italy’s Narnia Festival and has led masterclasses and academic appointments throughout the U.S. and Europe. Andrea is represented by Randsman Artists Management. Andrea will work with singers before the public on Bel Canto vocal technique and Italian art songs.

Internationally recognized for his work with classical, Broadway, and contemporary style singers, voice teacher, Neil Semer, offers his extensive insight guiding singers through an enjoyable afternoon of music from the American Songbook. Semer has a summer training institute for singers in both Germany and Canada. In addition to the Neil Semer Training Institutes abroad and maintaining a vibrant voice studio in New York, he also teaches in London, Paris, Copenhagen, and Amsterdam.

Spanish Language Art Song with MAYA (HOOVER) SYPERT & JOSE MELENDEZ
Dr. Maya (Hoover) Sypert, (mezzo) and pianist and vocal coach, José Meléndez explore the vast array of songs and poetry of Argentina, Chile, Cuba, Peru, Uruguay and other Latin American and European Spanish speaking countries. Dr. Sypert is the author of A Guide the Latin American Art Song . Dr. Sypert is the Associate Chair of the Music Department and the head of the voice area at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa, and Mr. Meléndez is a faculty member at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia and a sought after vocal coach and collaborative pianist. Mr. Meléndez has had the extreme privilege of working alongside and being mentored by such internationally renowned artists such as Dalton Baldwin, Justino Diaz, Placido Domingo, Pablo Elvira, Denyce Graves, Alfredo Kraus, Tom Krause, Victoria Livengood, Patrcie Munsel, Charlie Ricker, Renata Scotto, Diana Soviero, JJ Penna, and José Ramos Santana.

The Art Song Preservation Society of New York will present a concert of beautiful art songs from Italy, Germany, and Latin American countries along with memorable melodies from the Great American Songbook tradition all performed by young artists coached and prepared by one of the leading vocal coaches and collaborative pianists in the country, José Meléndez.
These events will take place at Manhattan School of Music at 130 Claremont Avenue.

Spanish Language Art Song with MAYA (HOOVER) SYPERT & JOSE MELENDEZ
Dr. Maya (Hoover) Sypert, (mezzo) and pianist and vocal coach, José Meléndez explore the vast array of songs and poetry of Argentina, Chile, Cuba, Peru, Uruguay and other Latin American and European Spanish speaking countries. Dr. Sypert is the author of A Guide the Latin American Art Song . Dr. Sypert is the Associate Chair of the Music Department and the head of the voice area at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa, and Mr. Meléndez is a faculty member at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia and a sought after vocal coach and collaborative pianist. Mr. Meléndez has had the extreme privilege of working alongside and being mentored by such internationally renowned artists such as Dalton Baldwin, Justino Diaz, Placido Domingo, Pablo Elvira, Denyce Graves, Alfredo Kraus, Tom Krause, Victoria Livengood, Patrcie Munsel, Charlie Ricker, Renata Scotto, Diana Soviero, JJ Penna, and José Ramos Santana.

Making her recital debut as a composer, Stevens will offer a preview of Flowers at Dawn, her multidisciplinary song cycle exploring humanity through floral relationships. Presented as part of ASPNY’s expanded commitment to supporting new music and living composers, this marks the organization’s first full recital devoted to contemporary works in its 15-year history. SUMMER OF SONG: AN ART SONG RECITAL 2 - Mikowsky Hall
The Art Song Preservation Society of New York will present a concert of beautiful art songs from Italy, Germany, and Latin American countries along with memorable melodies from the Great American Songbook tradition all performed by young artists coached and prepared by one of the leading vocal coaches and collaborative pianists in the country, José Meléndez.
These events will take place at Manhattan School of Music at 130 Claremont Avenue.

Program costs: In 2025, there is no application fee. However, for singers admitted into the program, there will be a $25 program fee per masterclass. The fee is waived for all singers enrolled at Manhattan School of Music or who have graduated within the past 6 months from MSM. Additionally, for pianists accepted into in the program, there will be no cost. Please keep in mind that only a limited number of pianists will be accepted so it is highly competitive.
Event Tickets
Auditors - Open to the public: The public is warmly invited to observe these masterclasses and gain insight from renowned master teachers and performers in the art song genre as they work with talented singers and pianists. The audit fee is $10 per masterclass.
General tickets for all ASPS master classes and recitals are $10. Advance purchased tickets may also be obtained online via PayPal.
