Dr. Carol Kimball
Dr. Kimball is the author of Song: A Guide to Art Song Style and Literature, a widely used text and reference that has become the principal one-volume American source on the topic. Her newest book Art Song: Linking Poetry and Music was recently published in May 2013 by Hal Leonard Corporation. She is the editor of several music anthologies: The French Anthology; Women Composers: A Heritage of Song; and Art Song in English: 50 Songs by 21 American and British Composers (Hal Leonard Corporation) and co-author of Interpreting the Songs of Jacques Leguerney (with Mary Dibbern and Patrick Choukroun for Pendragon Press). Other publications include the Singer’s Edition opera anthologies and numerous articles and reviews on opera and song literature in many professional journals including The Opera Quarterly and the Journal of Singing, as well as liner notes for a number of CD recordings. She currently writes The Song File, a regular column in the Journal of Singing. As a performer, Carol Kimball earned a reputation as an expressive and versatile performer in concerts, musical theater, and opera.
Recognized as a gifted recitalist, her imaginative programming and the unusual scope of her repertoire garnered critical praise. A specialist in French repertoire, she has studied and coached with Pierre Bernac, Gérard Souzay, Martial Singher, Thomas Grubb, and Dalton Baldwin, and regularly presents master classes and lectures on French mélodie. Her recital of French mélodie for Orion Records with pianist Thomas Grubb may be found in many college and university libraries. She is a member of the Board of Advisors of The Lotte Lehmann Foundation and a recipient of the Nevada Governor’s Arts Award for Excellence in the Arts. Other honors include the Nevada Board of Regents’ Creative Excellence Award for the Nevada System of Higher Education and the UNLV Alumni Association’s Outstanding Faculty Award.
Dr. Kimball is an Emerita Professor of Voice and a Barrick Distinguished Scholar at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where she taught voice and vocal repertoire for 36 years and founded the UNLV Opera Theatre program. Retired from full-time teaching in 2008, Dr. Kimball remains active presenting master classes, writing, and adjudicating.
