Summer of Art Song Festival 2024
The Art Song Preservation Society of New York (ASPSNY) and Duncan Williams Vocal Program is pleased to announce our upcoming summer festival hosted by Manhattan School of Music.
This project is made possible in part with funds from Creative Engagement, a regrant program supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York state legislature, and the Howard Gilman Foundation, and is administered by LMCC. LMCC serves, connects, and makes space for artists and community.

Spanish Language Art Song with MAYA (HOOVER) SYPERT & JOSE MELENDEZ
Dr. Maya (Hoover) Sypert, (mezzo) and pianist and vocal coach, José Meléndez explore the vast array of songs and poetry of Argentina, Chile, Cuba, Peru, Uruguay and other Latin American and European Spanish speaking countries. Dr. Sypert is the author of A Guide the Latin American Art Song and a professor on the voice faculty at the University of Hawaii, and Mr. Meléndez is a faculty member at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia.

African American Song with SIDNEY OUTLAW
Lauded by The New York Times as a “terrific singer” with a “deep, rich timbre” and the San Francisco Chronicle as an “opera powerhouse” with a “weighty and forthright” sound, Sidney Outlaw continues to delight audiences in the U.S. and abroad with his rich and versatile baritone and engaging stage presence. A sought-after concert singer and recitalist, Mr. Outlaw collaborates regularly with renowned pianists Warren Jones, Carol Wong, Steven Blier, and Michael Barrett. His concert and recital appearances include the debut asJohn Stevens in the world premiere concert of H. Leslie Adam’s opera Blake at the prestigious Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem, and the world premiere of Wayne Oquin’s A Time to Break Silence: Songs inspired by the Words and Writings of Martin Luther King, Jr., commissioned by The Juilliard School. Mr Outlaw will guide singers and the audience on how to interpret this genre authentically within a cultural context regardless of the performer’s racial identity. While this music is written by composers of color who have often been marginalized or not fully represented in classical music, the essence of these songs transcends the color of the performer. Our guest artist will offer his expert insight on how to approach the music intelligently and with empathy through creating more integrated singing communities.

Japanese Art song with AKIKO HOSAKI
A native of Osaka, Japan, Akiko Hosaki is acclaimed for her sensitive playing, and one of the most sought-after collaborative pianists and vocal coaches in the New York – New Jersey area. She is currently an adjunct assistant professor and the pianist coordinator of the University Accompanist Program at Westminster Choir College & School of Performing Arts of Rider University, and a staff member at the College of New Jersey and Bard Conservatory. Brought to the US by Dalton Baldwin, legendary collaborative pianist, she was his assistant at Académie internationale d'été de Nice from 2013 until his passing in 2019, and at Mozarteum Sommerakademie in 2017 and 2018. She has collaborated with opera companies, such as Castleton Festival, New Jersey State Opera, Opera North, Opera New Jersey, Boheme Opera, and Princeton Festival Opera. She also enjoys collaborating with instrumentalists, and frequently performs in chamber music concerts and the keyboard/basso continuo in orchestras. She holds degrees from Musashino Academia Musicae in Japan, Westminster Choir College, and University of Minnesota. ASPSNY and Duncan Williams are delighted to introduce singers and audiences to the beauty of Japanese art song this season through our guide Akiko Hosaki in this masterclass as well as a recital featuring Ms. Hosaki at the piano and Sahoko Sato-Timpone (mezzo) in celebration of Make Music Day on June 21st at 7pm.

Since her Carnegie Hall debut in 2013, Laetitia Grimaldi has sung in many renowned halls, opera stages and international festivals worldwide: the Kennedy Center (USA), Shanghai & Forbidden City Concert Halls (China), Festival Pitic (Mexico), Festival Musica Classica (Canada), Verbier Festival (Switzerland), Ravinia Festival (USA), Festival d'Aix-en-Provence (France) and the Melbourne Festival (Australia).She has received mentorship with some of the world's leading artists, including Sir Thomas Allen, Sir Alfred Brendel, Ileana Cotrubas, Thomas Quasthoff, François le Roux, Thomas Grubb, Lorraine Nubar and Dalton Baldwin.
Born in Jerusalem, Israel, and raised in South Africa, Ammiel Bushakevitz began playing piano at the age of four. Ammiel studied at the Hochschule für Musik in Leipzig and the Conservatoire Nationale Supérieur de Musique in Paris, under Phillip Moll, Pierre-Laurent Aimard and Alfred Brendel. Ammiel is one of the leading vocal accompanists of his generation, having worked closely with such singers as the late Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Teresa Berganza, Thomas Hampson, Dame Felicity Lott, Nadine Sierra, Barbara Bonney and Brigitte Fassbaender. Passionate about education, Ammiel has presented masterclasses in Australia, Spain, China),the USA, Germany, Israel, and other countries. Together, this collaborative duo will explore the beauty of French song with singers before the public.

Italian Art Song with Lis Stevens
In the US and abroad, soprano Elisabeth Stevens is hailed for her elegant artistry, majestic presence, and powerful voice. Her credits include the Metropolitan Opera, Academy of Music in Philadelphia, Teatro Verdi di Sassari, and other world stages in Italy, France, China, Austria and across the US. Ms. Stevens’ operatic repertoire includes the title roles in Aida, Ariadne auf Naxos, Turandot, Maria Stuarda, and Suor Angelica and she has also performed Elvira in Giuseppe Verdi’s Ernani, Elisabetta in Don Carlo, Donna Anna in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro, and more. Ms. Stevens also excels in concert repertoire having performed the world premiers of four new works for soprano on texts by Sonia Sanchez with the Network for New Music Ensemble and she has been the soprano soloist in Verdi’s Requiem, Brahms’ Requiem, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, Haydn’s Mass in Time of War, Handel’s Messiah, and Mendelssohn’s Elijah among others. Ms. Stevens’ performances have been featured in Philadelphia on CBS News, NBC10 and on New York’s WQXR.
Off stage, Ms. Stevens is dedicated to teaching and educating singers and others about vocal technique, the business of singing, and living in true freedom as an artist. Her New York based voice studio, Studio LIS Voice – established in 2015 — includes a series of empowering workshops for artists of all levels. 2020 saw the launch of her innovative Quarantine Sing! Program, which offered aspiring singers the opportunity to cultivate peace and mindfulness through troubling times, while intensely studying their art and performing for international audiences through digital platforms, singing in virtual masterclasses for industry professionals including artist managers, conductors, and opera administrators.

German Art Song with NILS NEUBERT
Tenor Nils Neubert was born and raised in Hamburg, Germany, and maintains careers as a performer, coach, educator, scholar, and administrator in the United States and abroad. He is a sought-after interpreter of song, oratorio, opera, and chamber music, and has appeared as a soloist and small ensemble singer throughout North America and Europe. Nils Neubert teaches German diction and repertoire at the Manhattan School of Music (since 2015) and the Juilliard School (since 2013) and served as German coach at the Music Academy of the West for seven summers (2016–2022). He joined the Glimmerglass Festival and the Wolf Trap Opera Company in that same capacity during 2020 and 2022, respectively, as well as the music staff of the Metropolitan Opera in 2022, where he also began coaching for the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program in 2023. As of the 2023–24 academic year, Nils Neubert holds a full-time appointment in Vocal Arts at the Manhattan School of Music. He is also the current president of NATS-NYC (2022–2024) and has served on the University Faculty Senate at the New School (2017–2020). He will guide the audience through an illuminating discussion with singers as they perform some of the most cherished German song literature.

Great American Songbook with NEIL SEMER
Internationally recognized for his work with classical, Broadway, and contemporary style singers, voice teacher, Neil Semer, offers his extensive insight guiding singers through an enjoyable afternoon of music from the American Songbook. Semer has a summer training institute for singers in both Germany and Canada. In addition to the Neil Semer Training Institutes abroad and maintaining a vibrant voice studio in New York, he also teaches in London, Paris, Copenhagen, and Amsterdam.

American Art Song with MARK MARKHAM
For over four decades, Mark Markham has enchanted audiences worldwide with his exceptional musical talent and boundless dedication to the art of music. As a Steinway artist, Markham's illustrious career has been marked by accolades, remarkable collaborations, and a profound commitment to the craft. Mr. Markham, renowned for his work with legendary American soprano Jessye Norman (1945-2019) for 20 years with nearly 300 performances in over 25 countries, will work with singers on the American art song repertoire. Markham was awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award from John Hopkins University, and is considered one of the most prominent performers and teachers in his profession. In recent years, recitals have been given with a new generation of stars including, Karen Slack (soprano), Limmie Pulliam (tenor), and J’Nai Bridges (mezzo). Markham also has his own summer workshop, Singing in Sicily – a non-profit intensive training program for talented young singers from around the world.

Italian Art Song with Joan Dornemann
Founder and Artistic of the International Vocal Arts Institute ( IVAI) and Assistant Conductor at the Metropolitan Opera, Joan Dornemannis one of the most highly respected vocal coaches in the world. She has worked with such singers as Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo, Montserrat Caballé, José Carreras, Sherrill Milnes, Kiri Te Kanawa, Renée Fleming, Deborah Voigt, Neil Shicoff, Juan Diego Flórez, and Anna Netrebko, among others. She has also collaborated with outstanding opera singers as an accompanist for many solo performances. Ms. Dornemann has been associated with the Gran Liceo in Barcelona, the Spoleto Festival, and the New York City Opera. At the Met she worked with such conductors as James Levine, James Conlon, and Carlos Kleiber. She prepared singers from the Kirov Opera for a recording of La Forza del destino and performances of Carmen and Aida under the baton of Valery Gergiev, and she was in charge of musical preparation for La Bohème and La Cenerentola at the Opéra de Paris. Ms. Dornemann was awarded an Emmy for her contribution to the highly acclaimed “Live from the Met” telecast of La Bohème with Luciano Pavarotti and Renata Scotto. She also teaches master classes throughout the world and is the author of Complete Preparation: A Guide to Auditioning for the Opera. She was honored by the city of Tel Aviv, which issued a commemorative stamp bearing her picture, and she received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Montreal.

"A Showcase of Japanese Song and Composers" in celebration of Make Music Day featuring Yuriko Nonaka (soprano), Manami Hattori (soprano), & Akiko Hosaki (piano)
The Art Song Preservation Society of New York will present a concert of beautiful Japanese art songs by three incomparable specialists of the genre, Yuriko Nonaka (soprano), Manami Hattori (soprano), and Akiko Hosaki. A native of Osaka, Japan, Akiko Hosaki is acclaimed for her sensitive playing, and one of the most sought-after collaborative pianists and vocal coaches in the New York – New Jersey area. She is a protégée of the legendary collaborative pianist Dalton Baldwin. Manami Hattori-Fallen is originally from Kobe, Japan, but she has been living in the United States for more than a decade. She has sung concerts and recitals throughout Japan, the United States and Europe in such venues as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center with the New York Philharmonic. Yuriko Nonaka, a versatile soprano, is also a native of Japan. The program will also include some piano works by Japanese composers. Also performing on the concert are Ally Christiansen (soprano), Sarah Curtis (soprano), Tomoko Nago (mezzo), and Blair Boone-Migura (piano).
These events will take place at Manhattan School of Music at 130 Claremont Avenue. The 6/21 recital will be held in Miller Hall, and the masterclasses and 6/8 and 6/15 recitals in Mikowsky Hall.

Italian Art Song with Joan Dornemann
Founder and Artistic of the International Vocal Arts Institute ( IVAI) and Assistant Conductor at the Metropolitan Opera, Joan Dornemannis one of the most highly respected vocal coaches in the world. She has worked with such singers as Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo, Montserrat Caballé, José Carreras, Sherrill Milnes, Kiri Te Kanawa, Renée Fleming, Deborah Voigt, Neil Shicoff, Juan Diego Flórez, and Anna Netrebko, among others. She has also collaborated with outstanding opera singers as an accompanist for many solo performances. Ms. Dornemann has been associated with the Gran Liceo in Barcelona, the Spoleto Festival, and the New York City Opera. At the Met she worked with such conductors as James Levine, James Conlon, and Carlos Kleiber. She prepared singers from the Kirov Opera for a recording of La Forza del destino and performances of Carmen and Aida under the baton of Valery Gergiev, and she was in charge of musical preparation for La Bohème and La Cenerentola at the Opéra de Paris. Ms. Dornemann was awarded an Emmy for her contribution to the highly acclaimed “Live from the Met” telecast of La Bohème with Luciano Pavarotti and Renata Scotto. She also teaches master classes throughout the world and is the author of Complete Preparation: A Guide to Auditioning for the Opera. She was honored by the city of Tel Aviv, which issued a commemorative stamp bearing her picture, and she received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Montreal.

From spirituals to zarzuelas, and a range of songs in between, the audience will be transported on a musical journey that celebrates diversity, resilience, and the universal language of music. Featuring an ensemble of talented singers from this year's program, each bringing their own interpretation and emotion to the repertoire, this recital promises an unforgettable exploration of shared heritage and artistic expression.

SUMMER OF SONG: AN ART SONG RECITAL - Mikowsky Hall
Embark on a transcendent voyage through the realm of art song vocal literature from France, Germany, Italy, America, along with music from The Great American Songbook tradition in a mesmerizing recital, graced by the unparalleled pianistic talent of Mark Markham. With masterful finesse, Markham breathes life into the timeless compositions that define these rich traditions, from the haunting mélodies of Debussy to the beautiful Lieder of Schumann and a range of art song compositions from other European and American traditions. Joined by a diverse array of singers, each with their own distinctive style and interpretation, this concert promises an enchanting tapestry of musical storytelling. Audiences will be swept away by the emotive power and exquisite craftsmanship of these beloved songs.

"A Showcase of Japanese Song and Composers" in celebration of Make Music Day featuring Yuriko Nonaka (soprano), Manami Hattori (soprano), & Akiko Hosaki (piano)
The Art Song Preservation Society of New York will present a concert of beautiful Japanese art songs by three incomparable specialists of the genre, Yuriko Nonaka (soprano), Manami Hattori (soprano), and Akiko Hosaki. A native of Osaka, Japan, Akiko Hosaki is acclaimed for her sensitive playing, and one of the most sought-after collaborative pianists and vocal coaches in the New York – New Jersey area. She is a protégée of the legendary collaborative pianist Dalton Baldwin. Manami Hattori-Fallen is originally from Kobe, Japan, but she has been living in the United States for more than a decade. She has sung concerts and recitals throughout Japan, the United States and Europe in such venues as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center with the New York Philharmonic. Yuriko Nonaka, a versatile soprano, is also a native of Japan. The program will also include some piano works by Japanese composers. Also performing on the concert are Ally Christiansen (soprano), Sarah Curtis (soprano), Tomoko Nago (mezzo), and Blair Boone-Migura (piano).
These events will take place at Manhattan School of Music at 130 Claremont Avenue. The 6/21 recital will be held in Miller Hall, and the masterclasses and 6/8 and 6/15 recitals in Mikowsky Hall.
