Monday, June 20, 2022 11 am ET
Spanish Language Art Song with Maya (Hoover) Sypert & José Meléndez,
Dr. Maya (Hoover) Sypert, (mezzo) and pianist and vocal coach, José Meléndez explore the vast array of songs and poetry of Argentina, Chile, Cuba, Peru, Uruguay and other Latin American and European countries. Dr. Sypert is the author of A Guide the Latin American Art Song and a professor on the voice faculty at the University of Hawaii, and Meléndez is a faculty member at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia.

Vocal Technique in Song with ANDREA DELGIUDICE
International opera/theater director and prominent voice teacher Andrea DelGiudice will work with singers on developing healthy Bel Canto vocal technique through the medium of art song. A remarkable artist who uses wit and humor in her compelling classes, participating singers and the audience are sure to enjoy this afternoon!

African American Song with EMERY STEPHENS (baritone)
Recognized as one of the leading performers, masterclass teachers and lecturers of African American Song repertoire, Dr. Emery Stephens (baritone), offers his extensive insight and unique philosophy on an area of music all too often neglected by artists. He will guide singers and the audience on how to interpret this genre authentically within a cultural context regardless of the performer’s racial identity. While this music is written by composers of color who have often been marginalized or not fully represented in classical music, the essence of these songs transcends the color of the performer. Our guest artist will offer his expert insight on how to approach the music intelligently and with empathy through creating more integrated singing communities.

Ukrainian art song with Melanie Turgeon
Dr. Melanie Turgeon has been heavily involved with the Ukrainian Art Song Project for more than a decade and is the co-director and faculty member of its Summer Institute. Dr. Turgeon began studying conducting at the age of 16, under the tutelage of Wolodymyr Kolesnyk, former conductor of Kyiv State Opera and Ballet Theatre. She completed her postsecondary education at the University of Illinois, graduating with a Doctor of the Musical Arts Degree in Choral Music. Dr. Turgeon is Associate Professor of Music and Choral Director at The King’s University in Edmonton, Alberta. She has conducted many choirs and ensembles and has presented research at several academic institutions and conferences both in Canada and internationally. In this talk, Dr. Turgeon will present background and musical examples of various aspects of Ukrainian art song.

The Fusion of Word & Tone - Italian art song with THOMAS MURACO
Thomas Muraco, pianist, conductor, and coach, will explore the fusion of word and tone in the Italian art song repertoire. Muraco is a celebrated coach who cites the legendary conductor Leonard Bernstein as one of his mentors. Muraco is on faculty at the Manhattan School of Music. Mr Muraco teaches and judges vocal competitions around the globe.

French Song with THOMAS GRUBB
Thomas Grubb's Singing in French: A Manual of French Diction & French Vocal Repertoire was published in April of 1979 by Schirmer Books/Macmillan, almost immediately establishing Grubb as a leading authority on both subjects. Since then, some forty-two years ago, his book has sold steadily throughout the world. As a faculty member at the Juilliard School, Manhattan School, the Curtis Institute and the Peabody Conservatory, Grubb taught actively for fifty years. As pianist and vocal coach, he has collaborated with singers such as Renee Fleming, Audra McDonald, Benita Valente and Eleanor Steber. He has also given master classes throughout North America, Europe and Asia and served as juror for the Metropolitan Opera Guild auditions, the International Paris Voice Competition and the Fulbright Commission. Grubb coached all the French opera productions at New York City Opera for more than twenty years. In 2002 the French Ministry of Culture decorated Thomas Grubb as a member of the Order of Arts and Letters for his contributions to French culture around the globe.

Frank Daykin, the author of The Encyclopedia of French Song, will work with singers and pianists on the songs of Claude Debussy. Singers should be prepared to bring one song by each of these iconic composers of French song.

American Songbook with NEIL SEMER
Internationally recognized for his work with classical, Broadway, and contemporary style singers, voice teacher, Neil Semer, offers his extensive insight guiding singers through an enjoyable afternoon of music from the American Songbook. Semer has a summer training institute for singers in both Germany and Canada. In addition to the Neil Semer Training Institutes abroad and maintaining a vibrant voice studio in New York, he also teaches in London, Paris, Copenhagen, and Amsterdam.

Dramatic Interpretation of song with MARK MARKHAM
Dr. Mark Markham, renowned for his work with legendary American soprano Jessye Norman (1945-2019), will work with singers and pianists on the art of partnership with particular focus on the dramatic interpretation of French and German vocal repertoire. Discover your best performance practices in this class. Markham was awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award from John Hopkins University, and is considered one of the most prominent performers and teachers in his profession. In recent years, recitals have been given with a new generation of stars including sopranos, Leah Crocetto and Jennifer O'Loughlin and mezzo-soprano J’Nai Bridges. Markham also has his own summer workshop, Singing in Sicily – a non-profit intensive training program for talented young singers from around the world.
These events will take place at Manhattan School of Music unless "virtually via Zoom" has been indicated.
